Social and economic development of the Smolensk Region
The regional development follows the all Russia tendencies, in 2013 there was considerable growth in industrial and agricultural production, construction, consumer market and investment activities which resulted in the decrease of unemployment and increase of standard of living in the region.

The share of industry in the regional GNP amounts to over 30%, processing production – 22%, production and distribution of electric power, gas and water – 9%. The processing production includes transport engineering, instrument and jewelry production.

Construction has the share of 8%, trade – 19%, transportation and communication – 10%, agriculture and forestry – 7%.
